Chapter 2: One Mean
In groups of 2-3, discuss the design of an experiment that could be analyzed using the methods discussed in Chapter 2 (inference of one mean). You do not need to conduct the experiment, but it should be designed so that it is feasible. Discuss and record the following:
Research question
Variable of interest, and type of variable
Parameter (definition and symbol)
Null and alternative hypotheses (in words and symbols)
Statistic
- Note: you will need two values here (i.e., sample mean and sample standard deviation)
Sample and sample size
- Note any possible sources of bias. How would you conduct the study with SRS, and how would you practically conduct the study?
In a spreadsheet program (e.g., Excel), write what the first few observations would look like.
Calculate the standardized statistic and state whether it Rejects or Fails To Reject the null hypothesis
What conclusion would you state given the standardized statistics?
What type of error might your study have made? In context, what does it mean?
